Sources for Reconstruction

The approach taken by the Scientific Committee: a three part monument, with a large base for the columns located on the Forum floor, a smaller base which is under all columns, unifying the effect around the Forum, and then the column with capitol and statue. The location and size of the monument bases are known, as well as the materials of the core. Some of the columns survive as well and rest on reconstructed bases. There are three types of memorial columns which survive: gray granite, pink Aswan granite, and one fluted (on the base known as the column of Phocas, originally erected by Diocletian). There are various theories as to the arrangement of the granite column.
