Milliarium Aureum
A monumental, symbolic milestone was erected by Augustus near the Temple of Saturn and the Rostra Augusti.
Reconstructed state: Building as first dedicated on site

Alternate names: None

Augustus erected this monument when he served as curator viarum in 20 BC to symbolize the starting point of the vast road system linking the city of Rome to its imperial possessions. The monument had the form of a typical milestone and was probably covered in gilded bronze (height: 1.45 meters; diameter: 1.15 meters). The exact location is uncertain, but scholars generally agree that the Milliarium Aureum corresponds to the remains found by Bunsen in 1833 behind the Rostra Augusti to the southeast.
