Alternate names: Temple of Vesta, Aedes Vestae

This small, round cult building was built at an early date and went through several building phases before reaching its final form under Septimius Severus, whose wife, Julia, Domna, restored it after the fire of 191 AD. It was built of white marble and had the form of a tholus with a low cupola capped by the statue of a figure holding a patera and scepter. Set on a high podium were twenty fluted columns (height: 4.45 meters) of the composite order set on plinths between which were metal gratings. A doorway opened on the east to provide access to the cella.
