Some people think that it is called the sacred way because on it the treaty between Romulus and Tatius was struck; others, because the priests use this road for preparing the sacrifices for the Ides. And indeed it should not, as the common folk think, be called ' sacred' as far as from the Regia to the house of the Rex Sacrorum, but also from the house of the Rex to the shrine of Strenia, and again from the Regia up to the citadel. And Verrius says that it ought not to be pronounced (sc. as one word) ... but distinctly, as the other roads, the via Flaminina, the via Appia, the via Latina, so not Novavia, but Nova via.
