Maurus (Marius) Servius Honoratus

Quod autem de Libero diximus, haec causa est, ut signum sit liberae civitatis: nam apud maiores aut stipendiariae erant, aut foederate, aut liberae. Sed in liberis civitatibus simulacrum Marsyae erat, qui in tutela Liberi patris est.

Moreover, for what we have said about Liber, this is the reason, so that he may be the sign of a free city: for in the time of our ancestors cities were either tributary, or allied or free. But in free cities there was a statue of Marsyas, who is under the protection of father Liber.
