M. Terentius Varro

Argiletum sunt qui scripserunt ab Argo Larisaeo, quod is huc venerit ibique sit sepultus, alii ab argilla, quod ibi id genus terrae sit.

The Argiletum, according to some writers, was named from Argus of Larisa, because he came to this place and was buried there; according to others, from the argilla ' clay,' because this kind of earth is found at this place.
